Pune, March 29

Luxury carmaker Mercedes Benz India Ltd (MBIL) has set a target of relocating to its new production facility at Chakan, exactly 10 years to the date after it began operations at the present premises on January 1, 1999.

Mr Wilfried Aulbur, Managing Director, MBIL, said, “We will move out in the first quarter for certain, but have set an internal target of doing this on January 1, 2009.”

A little over a year ago, MBIL acquired 100 acres at Chakan near Pune, to set up a new manufacturing facility. It will shift all existing assembly lines to the new location and also install new ones for production of the present portfolio and bus chassis. The company is investing Rs 250 crore, all from internal accruals, in this venture.

Once the company shifts operations to Chakan, the present 20 acre will return to the Tata Motors-fold, Mr Suhas Kadlaskar, Director, Corporate Affairs said.
