IIMA nearly trebles fee to Rs 11.50 lakh

Virendra Pandit

Ahmedabad, March 29 The Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIM-A) has nearly trebled its fee for the two-year Post-Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) from the existing Rs 4 lakh to Rs 11.50 lakh.

The students to be admitted in June to PGP for the 2008-09 batch will have to shell out Rs 5.50 lakh for the first year and Rs 6 lakh for the second year. Earlier, the fee for PGP was Rs 2 lakh each in the first and second years.

The decision was taken unanimously at the 163rd meeting of the IIM-A Board of Governors held here on Saturday under the chairmanship of Dr Vijaypat Singhania, Chairman of the IIM-A Board of Governors and Society The Board reviewed the cost structure of the two-year PGP and unanimously decided to raise the fees. However, it said in a statement: “No deserving candidate would be deprived of an opportunity to study at the IIM-A on account of lack of financial resources. The Board has, therefore, also decided to triple the annual family income limit from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 6 lakh for a student to be eligible for financial support.

Graded need-based financial aid will be available to eligible students who qualify for financial support, the statement said.

Meanwhile, at the 43rd Annual Convocation held this on Saturday evening, Dr Singhania strongly advocated the need for the institutes’ autonomy and financial self-reliance. “I see no reason why the Government should control these institutes” he remarked, while describing as “shameful” the recent reports that the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay was forced to seek government funds even to pay salaries. The institutes should not resort to profiteering but have surplus funds to carry out their activities. He also regretted the short supply quality faculty in premier academia. Mr Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, delivered the convocation address at the function in which diplomas, fellowships and gold medals were conferred on the students.
