Roadways Industry & Economy - Cars Car carrier numbers on the rise
Vehicle carriers are in greater demand as car production is rising rapidly. The fleet of car carriers, i.e. the vehicles used for transportation of cars across the country, is steadily increasing. The present size, estimated at 10,000, is likely to increase substantially, as the production of cars is estimated to rise to two million annually from the present around 1.3 million. But, the car carriers are not covered under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules 1989. This creates a lot of problems as the operators and crew of the vehicles would be often s ubjected to frequent harassment in the hands of the law enforcing authorities in various States. States such as Haryana, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra have given specific approvals for registration of car carriers, but RTOs and officials concerned in other States do not recognise these approvals. Which means the harassment continues unabated. It, therefore, will be in the fitness of things if car carrier is incorporated in the list of specified vehicles (with their dimensions specified) in the Section 93 of CMVR.
