Rousing wet session over N-E region

Vinson Kurian

Thiruvananthapuram, April 1 Strengthening northwesterlies have blown away cloudiness associated with the persisting trough in the southeast Bay of Bengal, but have triggered a rousing wet session over northeast India and contiguous Indo-China.

A prevailing ‘wind discontinuity’ (where winds change directions) and resultant moisture incursion from the Bay will combine to cause scattered to fairly widespread rain or thundershowers and isolated thunder squalls over the Northeastern States and adjoining east India during the next three days.

A trough lay extended from sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim to north Orissa through Gangetic West Bengal on Tuesday. West Bengal, Sikkim and north Orissa would witness rain or thundershowers accompanied by isolated thunder squalls.

PENINSULAR RAIN

Moist southerlies-to-southeasterlies scraping the southeast coast still manage to drop some rain over parts of the peninsula even as they raced towards the northeast. They bump into the rampaging westerlies from the opposite direction, setting off lightning and thunder activity at some places.

Facilitating this was the trough that ran south from west Madhya Pradesh to south Tamil Nadu through Vidarbha, Marathwada, Telangana, Rayalaseema and interior Tamil Nadu. An update by the Chennai Regional Met Centre said that the 24 hours ended Tuesday morning saw rainfall scattered at a few places over Tamil Nadu and south interior Karnataka. Isolated rainfall occurred over Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.

HEAVY FALLS

Among centres witnessing heavy to very heavy rainfall were Erode (12cm); Mangalapuram (Namakkal, 10 cm; Sathanurdam (Thiruvannamalai, 8 cm); and Thiruvannamalai and Rasipuram (Namakkal, 7 cm each).

Forecast valid until Thursday said that rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at a few places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema. Isolated rain or thundershowers are likely over Telangana and south interior Karnataka.

On Tuesday, a western disturbance made a call along the country’s northwest border lay Jammu and Kashmir and neighbourhood. An induced cyclonic circulation parked itself over Punjab and neighbourhood.

An India Meteorological Department (IMD) update said that the isolated to scattered rain to thundershower activity in the northwest is likely to continue for another two days.

Another western disturbance trailing the system close will drive up the rain and thundershower activity for three more days from Friday. The unstable weather will bring down the mercury levels appreciably.

In region-wise forecast, the IMD said that rain or thundershowers are likely at a few places over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Delhi, Chandigarh and West Uttar Pradesh during the next few days. The rest of the region will witness isolated rain or thundershowers.

To the west, isolated dust storms or thunderstorms are likely over Rajasthan and Gujarat. Central India would also witness similar weather during the period.
