Opinion - Letters
Indiscriminate expansion

I agree with the views expressed in the article titled “IITs-Quality only because of exclusivity”.

If the government increases the number of IITs or IIMs to provide greater opportunities to aspirants, the quality of the courses is bound to suffer to suffer.

It is common knowledge that indiscriminate expansion will bring about dilution in quality.

However, if the government takes adequate care to maintain the quality of the courses right from day one itself, there could be no objection to setting up new institutions.

Invariably, there is indiscriminate expansion when the government decides to increase the number of any institutions.

For instance, there are 27 social science research institutes in various States which are being run in a bureaucratic manner and little attention is being paid to the research.

Mushrooming of such institutes will surely reduce their stature and calibre. If adequate care is taken to maintain quality by providing talented staff, well-stocked libraries, equipment and other infrastructure, then such new institutes can be set up.

What is required is thorough planning and formulation of strategies beforehand.

The Government must help in this effort.

As rightly stated in the article, exclusivity is a virtue of these institutes. Hence, the Government must initiate steps to set up professional institutions such as IITs, IIMs, AIIMS’ only after making adequate provision for investment and spending on them with a careful eye on maintaining standards.
