Letters Preserving exclusivity
If at all exclusivity is the criterion, only the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore can claim so because of its single location of operation. IIT lost its exclusivity the moment more institutions with the same name were set up at various locations after the first one at Kharagpur. Today, IIT has become a brand, operational from different locations, not necessarily with any loss of exclusivity because their faculties have upheld the standards and reputation in creating pools of highly talented scientific and technical graduates year after year. Successive governments at the Centre ought to have expanded the IIT brand in a gradual manner, instead of the present decision of establishing eight IITs at one go — perceived to be a knee-jerk reaction in the run-up to the general elections. However, I feel there is a need to expand the brand within the country, commensurate with the demand from hundreds of talented aspirants, and to cater to the employment and entrepreneurial needs. The only rider should be that there should not be any compromise on the quality of faculty or intake of students. The faculty requirements, after all, can be built over three-four years. Just retired professors (with some age relaxation, if needed) or those serving in the present IITs but seeking a change to the new IITs, academically interested senior R&D scientists and NRI scientists/professors who are interested in returning return to India, can be recruited. If at all there is a feeling of “sinking of the country in a sea of mediocrity “, it is because of the multitude of engineering colleges sanctioned by AICTE, which reached a level of 1,668 by August 31, 2007 and are likely to swell by a couple of hundreds by 2008-2009, some of which are inadequately staffed and equipped.
