Major ports handle 12% more cargo in 2007-08

Chennai, April 4 In 2007-08, the 12 major ports handled a total of 519 million tonnes of cargo, an increase of 12 per cent over 463 mt handled in 2007-08, according to tentative figures released by the Indian Ports Association.

Crossing target

The ports also surpassed the target of 515 mt set up the Shipping Ministry by 0.75 per cent for 2007-08. Incidentally, all the ports achieved positive growth during the fiscal, with six ports achieving double-digit growth.

Kandla tops

Kandla emerged as the largest cargo-handling port in 2007-08 with a handling of 64.89 mt (52.98 mt), an increase of 22.48 per cent. It overtook marginally the Visakhapatnam port, which had the record of being on top for eight years in succession. Visakhapatnam handled 64.59 mt (56.38 mt), an increase of 14.56 per cent, the figures says.

Miss the target

Six ports, including Mumbai, missed the target fixed by the ministry for cargo handling during 2007-08. Mormugao fell short of the target of 38.93 mt by 9.78 per cent; Paradip fell short by 7.51 per cent and Kochi by 6.66 per cent.
