Bangalore, April 6

Global PC vendor Taiwan’s Acer Inc said it expects revenue in India for 2008 to touch Rs 1,800 crore, up from Rs 1,200 crore in 2007, helped by strong sales in the notebook segment. Globally it expects a revenue of $20 billion, the company added.

Mr W.S. Mukund, Managing Director, Acer India (Pvt) Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the company, said Acer plans to ship 800,000 PC (desktop and notebooks) in India in 2008, which is a growth of 35 per cent over 2007. He said by the end of the present year, the company hopes to be the second largest notebook vendor in the country.

He said notebook sales would see a 62 per cent rise in the present year, but the growth rate for desktops and notebooks taken together would be about 20 percent. According to an IDC India report, Acer was the third largest notebook vendor in India in 2007, with a market share of 10 per cent.

Mr Mukund said the growth rate for 2008 would be a little slower than 2007. While 2007 saw a year-on-year growth of about 25 per cent, the rate would be a little above 20 percent for 2008, he added.

Mr S. Rajendran, Chief Marketing Officer, Acer India, said the company would spend Rs 75 crore for sales and marketing in 2008. He said Acer India would increase the number of brand stores to 350 from the present 250. It would also grow its service centres from the present 269, he added.

Acer would especially focus on the small and medium business segment to grow its commercial laptop business Mr Rajendran said. He said the company also has strong engagement with the large retail stores like Croma, E-Zone, Next and others, which are important sale points.

Products launched

The company launched two new notepads last week — Aspire 6920 and Aspire 8920, which comes with the second generation Dolby Home Theatre technology, and the CineDash media console, a touch-sensitive media control area.

Mr Rajendran said the Aspire 6920 would cost Rs 49,999 and has a battery back-up of about three hours. The Aspire 8920 priced at Rs 79, 999, has a battery back-up of three and a half hours, he added.
