Mumbai, April 6 The 45th Merchant Navy Week celebrations concluded here on Saturday, with the shipping industry listing out the tasks and challenges ahead.

Addressing a meeting to mark the conclusion of the celebrations, Mr A.P.V.N. Sarma, Secretary (Shipping), expressed concern that the share of Indian flagged vessels carrying the country’s exim trade had fallen to 12.2 per cent.

He also felt that the country’s energy security should be protected by ensuring that a bulk of the crude oil and petroleum products imported into India were carried on Indian ships. “We should ensure that in the long term, we are not held to ransom in any event…and we are not at the mercy of shipping lines of other countries,” he said.

Mr Anwar-Ul-Hoda, member, Planning Commission, said even if the Indian shipping were to maintain its existing share in carriage of India’s exim trade, the Indian fleet strength would have to increase to 20 million gross tonnage from the existing level of 9 million.
