Madurai rail division earnings

Madurai, April 8

Passenger earnings in the Madurai division of Southern Railway during 2007-08 have registered a growth of 19 per cent. During the year, the division earned Rs 204 crore as against Rs 171 crore the previous year. According to the Divisional Railway Manager, Mr Hemant Kumar, there has been a decline in freight earnings by Rs 39 crore. Coal and cement loading formed a major chunk of freight traffic and the total earnings of the division stood at Rs 336.78 crore. Broad gauge c onversion works and the simultaneous closure of metre gauge lines in the division affected the passenger traffic, which dropped to 230 lakh, compared to 248 lakh during 2006-07. The division has bagged four efficiency shields for outstanding performance in finance, medical and mechanical departments, he added. —
