London biz delegation on India tour

Our Bureau

Chennai, April 13 The Lord Mayor of the City of London, Mr Alderman David Lewis, is in India, leading a business delegation, comprising around 50 city representatives. The delegation is on 11-day tour of India starting from Sunday and Chennai is its first port of call.

(‘The City’ refers to the one-square mile area of London — the global financial hub and the oldest part of the metropolis. The ‘Mayor of the City of London’ is a position different from London’s Mayor.)

On Monday, Mayor Lewis will meet several young entrepreneurs and businessmen in Chennai to discuss enterprise and raising capital for early stage business, especially how the City can help. The event will highlight how the UK-India Business Angels Network (launched in India in January 2008 by mr Gordon Brown) is already helping young entrepreneurs and businessmen.

It will also seek to explain how this works in partnership with the Indian Angel Network, the British Business Angels Association and TiE.

Later in the day, Mayor Lewis will deliver the keynote address at a seminar on ‘Maritime India’s Growth Potential’, organised by The British Deputy High Commission, Chennai, and Maritime London in association with the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (Madras Branch).

As part of his programme in India, the Lord Mayor will meet the Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, the Minister of Finance, the Law Minister, , the Deputy Governor of the RBI and the Chairman of SEBI.

The delegation’s visit concludes in Delhi, between April 21 and 23. The delegation includes representatives from major investment banks, law firms, insurers, accountancy firms, shipping firms and exchanges. The visit has been supported by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office and UK Trade & Investment.
