Armani-DLF team proposes wholesale trade of Armani products

New Delhi, April 14 The recently approved Giorgio Armani-DLF joint venture proposes to undertake wholesale trading of ‘Armani’ branded products besides getting into single-brand retail trading of Armani products including apparel and perfumes.

The 51:49 venture between Giorgio Armani SpA and real estate major DLF would set up shops to undertake single-brand retail trading of Armani products such as footwear, leather products, watches, eyewear, jewellery, phones, sport gear and other accessories under the labels ‘Giorgio Armani’, ‘Emporio Armani’, ‘Armani Jean’, ‘Armani Junior’ and ‘Armani Collezioni’, sources said.

Currently, 100 per cent foreign direct investment is allowed in wholesale trade, but only 51 per cent in single brand outlets.

“With the joint venture proposing wholesale trading, Armani could introduce a range of products and not restrict it to a select few. This apart, in all likelihood, Armani could also be permitted to buy goods from its parent company and then distribute it to retail shops and multi-branded outlets,” a retail analyst said.

37 countries

Giorgio Armani is engaged in the design, manufacture, distribution and sale of high fashion goods and accessories and has retail stores in 37 countries.

When contacted, a DLF spokesperson declined to comment on the proposal.

The Indian retailing market size is currently estimated at $180 billion. Of this, organised retailing comprises only 1.6 per cent and is estimated at around $ 3.5 billion.
