POABS Group launches crop procurement drive in Palakkad

Our Bureau

Kochi, April 14 POABS Group, which launched a crop procurement drive in Palakkad district, has entered into an MoU with Padasekhara Samithi in the district on extending technical support to the farmers in the form of supply of organic bio-manure, bio-fertilisers and bio-control agents for the crop.

POABS had also offered a buy back of the crop for the farmers who shifted to organic cultivation in Vadakkencherry Panchayat at a premium price of 25 per cent above the support price fixed by the State Government until the crop attained international organic certification.

The group offered a premium price of Rs12.50 per kg for the paddy at their door steps. The premium price was expected to go up to 40 per cent of the support price within three years of the crop securing international organic certification, POABS Group Director Mr Thomas Jacob said.

The understanding with farmers was expected to encourage more area to be brought under organic cultivation in the state, in tune with the State Government’s new Organic Policy, he added.

The Vadakkencherry Gramma Panchayat President, Mr P. Gangadharan, flagged off the vehicles carrying the procured paddy and received payment for the produce, on behalf of the Vadakkencherry Padasekhara Samithi, from POABS Group General Manager, Mr M. Premkumar.
