Workers take a break from paddy harvesting in Kuttanad, the rice bowl of Kerala. The region has lost about 50 per cent of its paddy crop to extended summer showers and acute labour shortage. Around 40 per cent of the State’s rice production is from Kuttanad. Paddy acreage in the area has shrunk to around 37,000 hectares from 55,000 hectares.
