Railways Railways freight earnings up 13.86% on higher volumes Our Bureau New Delhi, April 21 The Indian Railways freight earnings for fiscal 2007-08 have gone up by 13.86 per cent driven by a combination of higher freight volumes and tariff hikes. Railways recorded Rs 47,558.78 crore of freight earnings during the fiscal 2007-08 as compared, up 13.86 per cent from Rs 41,768.35 crore in 2006-07. Lower growth for loadingsHowever, it registered relatively lower growth rates for loadings (8.98 per cent) and net tonne kilometre (7.7 per cent). Net tonne kilometre (NTKM) is a parameter that measures the combined impact of loadings and distance for Railways. According to an official statement, Railways carried 794.21 million tonnes (mt) of freight traffic during fiscal 2007- 08 as compared to 728.77 mt in the previous fiscal, reflecting an increase of 8.98 per cent. NTKM went up to 5,11,801 million during 2007- 08, an increase of 7.70 per cent, from 4,75,227 million during 2006- 07, it added. The earnings from freight traffic during March 2008 was at Rs 4,856.96 crore, up 18.22 per cent Rs 4,108.37 crore in March 2007. Railways carried 78.48 mt of freight traffic during March 2008, up 8.35 per cent from 72.43 mt in March 2007. The NTKM went up to 50,357 million during March 2008, up 9.18 per cent year-on-year.
