New Delhi, April 21 The World Trade Organisation (WTO) Deputy Director General, Mr Harsha V. Singh, on Monday said that rising global food prices was not a threat to a possible breakthrough in the six-year-old Doha Round of multilateral trade negotiations.
He, however, felt that this “larger issue” (rising food prices) may weigh on the minds of trade negotiators in the coming days as they attempt to strike a deal.
In his address at a roundtable on ‘WTO Negotiations: Current State of Play’, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry, Mr Singh said a fresh draft negotiating Text on Agriculture and NAMA is expected in end April, which is likely to set the tone for the successful conclusion of the Round.
“It does not seem that rising food prices will derail WTO talks. It is certainly a concern. But negotiators are likely to keep this in the back of their mind during discussions,” Mr Singh later told presspersons here, when asked about the rising food prices and the impact on trade talks.
