Bay bracing for strong cyclone; Indian coast likely to be spared

Vinson Kurian

Bangkok, April 23 The central Bay of Bengal is preparing to host a strong cyclone event soon, with the preparatory low expected to form in the next few days. Mainland India would not be affected as the storm is forecast to take a direction away from the southeast coast of the country.

Climatologically speaking, the Bay has one peak period of tropical cyclones during May. In the instant case, the pre-monsoon low will pop up under the influence of an easterly wave with an embedded cyclonic circulation crossing into the hot and receptive waters of the Bay. It is not the first time that a passing easting easterly wave is triggering the formation of a strong cyclone in the Bay.

The system will keep moving to the west, deepening gradually in the process. The low will take form in the southern Bay, but will stay anchored in the adjoining central Bay for sometime before intensifying and recurving to target the Thailnad/Myanmar coast for a landfall around May 2.

Strong gusts of wind are seen being transmitted into the coast as early as from April 29, according to forecasts from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF). There are two other concurrent tropical cyclones raging within the same Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ).

Over the mainland, the seasonal heat low too is expected to form around May 2, much earlier than normal. On Wednesday, north, central and east India are coming to terms with a heat wave that is building strong and fast. The pressure gradient that links the heat low with the south peninsula can align itself after thunderstorms forecast for the region sign off.

According to the India Meteorologic Department (IMD), heat wave conditions developed over isolated pockets of Haryana and some parts of Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday.
