Telecommunications Alcatel Lucent eyes gear deals from new players
So far Alcatel Lucent has not been successful in breaking into the mobility space, dominated by Ericsson or Nokia Siemens Thomas K. Thomas New Delhi, April 24 In a bid to break into the Indian mobile equipment market, Alcatel Lucent has developed a model wherein it is offering new telecom licence holders advisory services on managing not just the network but also their businesses in terms of creating tariff plans, products and services and customer relationship services. Most of the new licence holders such as Videocon and Unitech do not have any experience in operating a telecom business, and Alcatel Lucent with its global experience wants to enable these companies to compete with incumbent operators. The initiative is also aimed at creating a differentiation for itself in the highly competitive equipment market, which is dominated by Ericsson and Nokia Siemens. “Every time a company wants to break into a market it has to bring something new. We are positioning ourselves to offer not just boxes and network components, but also a complete solution that will help the new companies to quickly roll out their services,” said Mr Vivek Mohan, the newly appointed President of Alcatel Lucent’s India operations. While Alcatel Lucent has got strong presence in segments such as fixed line, under sea cable and satellite communication, the company has not been successful in breaking into the mobility space. Most of the large cellular operators such as Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Essar have given contracts to either Ericsson or Nokia Siemens. Alcatel Lucent has got a small part of the pie through contracts from Reliance Communications and state-owned BSNL. Mr Mohan said that he was now aiming to take the company to the number three slot in the telecom equipment market. “We are the only company which has a total solution not just when it comes to technology but also when it comes to support services. Our unique position is that we can deliver solutions based on what the operator wants be it Wi-Max, GSM, CDMA or WCDMA,” Mr Mohan said. More Stories on : Telecommunications | Consulting
