Weather woes hit areca output

Aravindan

Kottayam, April 25 Arecanut production is reported to be very low in main producing centres due to climatic changes according to Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative Ltd.

News of import from Indonesia has impacted the market sentiments. In Karnataka, summer rains have adversely affected the drying process during the peak drying period.

Low quality

Improper drying resulted in the availability of the low quality material in the market. Though the Government has slashed the Central sales tax to two per cent from three per cent, it has not been implemented so far. The prevailing price of the new arecanut is Rs 75-78 a kg and the price of the old is Rs 80-85 a kg.
