113 sugar mills remain closed

New Delhi, April 28

The Government today said the total number of closed sugar mills in the country has increased to 113 this season from 105 last year. While in a majority of the States, the number of closed sugar mills remained static or rather declined, in Uttar Pradesh, it surged from 14 in 2006-07 to 23 in 2007-08 season, according to the data furnished by the Minister of State for Food and Public Distribution, Mr Akhilesh Prasad Singh, in the Lok Sabha. In a written reply to a query on steps taken by the Government to revive the closed sugar mills, Mr Singh said it was the responsibility of the entrepreneur concerned to take steps. – Our Bureau
