Maize prices drop on higher crop estimate

Our Bureau

Coimbatore, April 28 The third advance crop estimates from the Union Government released recently has put the country’s maize production for 2007-08 season at 18.54 million tonnes (mt), higher than last year’s production of 15.1 mt, and even higher than the second estimate released earlier for the current season.

The increased production anticipated is largely attributed to more crop area added this year amidst good monsoon, according to a US Grains Council India market report.

The second maize crop estimate had earlier set the crop at 16.78 mt.

COARSE GRAINS

Besides maize, the output of other principal crops in the coarse grain basket are also set to go up for 2007-08 season with the production of sorghum to show a rise of 8 per cent over last year’s crop to touch 7.73 mt and the pearl millet to 9.65 mt at a 14 per cent growth over previous year.

In the wake of high production numbers projected in advance estimates, prices of all coarse cereals made a moderate decline in prices, with maize sobering at Rs 7,060 a tonne from previous week’s Rs 7,200 plus.

Millet lower

Millet (bajra) remained marginally lower at Rs 7,280 a tonne and sorghum was lower by 2.7 per cent to Rs 9,860 a tonne. But the prices of barley surged by 4.2 per cent to Rs 9,550 a tonne this week.

IGC projection

International Grains Council in its latest update (April 24, 2008) has projected a lower corn and a higher barley crop for the year 2008-09. Its corn production projection is 762 mt, down from 775 mt for 2007-08. Barley production is, however, projected to be higher from 136 mt to 149 mt.
