CII Madurai Zone to develop job, entrepreneurial skills

Our Correspondent

Madurai, April 29 The Confederation of Indian Industry, Madurai Zone has set as its agenda (during 2008-09) and has decided to work on specific developmental activities in southern Tamil Nadu.

Mr R. Dinesh, Chairman, CII (Madurai Zone), unveiling the programmes for the year in a meet with the press on Monday, said that working with the theme for the year ‘Advantage South Tamil Nadu’ — evident from the increase in the regional contribution to GDP and GSDP by manufacturing and services industries — the focus will be on developing the skills at the local level, both in terms of job skills for students and entrepreneurial skills in the region, to become more competitive in the global scenario. The improvement would help attract more investments, he said.

Fifty companies have been identified and programmes are underway to train 1,500 students to gain specific skills required by them. There are a lot of successful small and medium enterprises in the region. They are, however, unable to grow beyond a point as they lack in access to capital, knowledge in marketing, technical skills and the ability to retain skilled workers. CII would be working on developing their skills in these areas, he further said.

Madurai has attracted more than 8 lakh tourists during 2007. To sustain and develop tourist interest, CII would promote a permanent tourism show, hold an annual event to showcase the heritage and cultural highlights and formulate a tourist package to develop the Chettinad region. Further, airline companies are being contacted to connect Madurai with international destinations, he mentioned.

To enlarge the activities of CII and become more inclusive, small and medium enterprises are encouraged to become members and efforts are underway to widen the spread among towns in the South and raise membership strength, added Mr Bharath K.S., Vice-Chairman, CII (Madurai Zone).
