Aquaculture States - Kerala Kinfra proposes to set up marine park at Beypore Kinfra hopes to leverage Beypore’s tradition in boat-building by setting up a modern boat yard at the marine park. Sankar Radhakrishnan Thiruvananthapuram, April 29 Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (Kinfra) proposes to set up a marine park at Beypore in Kozhikode district. The proposed park, which will have facilities such as seafood pre-processing units (units that add value to marine products and a boat repair yard), is expected to involve an investment of Rs 10 crore, said an official involved with the project. While a sum of Rs 1 crore has been earmarked for acquiring land for the project in the Kerala Budget for 2008-09, the remaining funds are expected to be mobilised through the Assistance to States for Developing Export Infrastructure and Allied Activities (ASIDE) scheme of the Union Government, the official added. Kinfra’s plan is to set up the marine park on 25 acres of land near the Beypore fishing harbour. It is envisaged that the seafood pre-processing centre at the park will be fully managed by people, especially women, from the local community. The pre-processing centre will have two units, with each unit being able to accommodate 150 workers. Kinfra plans to work with the Fisheries Department and the Marine Products Export Development Authority to set up the seafood pre-processing centre based on international norms. Given the demand, particularly export demand, for value-added seafood products, the proposed marine park will have units that make seafood-based products such as pickles and ready-to-eat food. Kinfra hopes to leverage Beypore’s tradition in boat-building by setting up a modern boat yard at the marine park. The company plans this facility to have the infrastructure required to manufacture and repair fishing boats. Other facilities planned at the park include a data management and communication centre for the fisheries sector and a centre to provide training in seafood processing and related activities. The park, which will also have social infrastructure such as a crèche and an activity centre, will be managed by Kinfra. More Stories on : Aquaculture | Kerala
