Education States - Andhra Pradesh Hyderabad varsity to provide 5% quota to OBC students Our Bureau Hyderabad, May 1 The University of Hyderabad (UoH) will implement 5 per cent reservation to the students belonging to Other Backward Castes (OBC) from this academic year, said the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Seyed E. Hasnain. It has sought Rs 140-crore funding to create additional infrastructure to implement the reservations. Following the recent Supreme Court judgement on 27 per cent reservations to OBC students in Central higher educational institutions, UoH has received a directive from the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development to implement the reservations. “The Government has agreed for a staggered approach spread over a maximum of three years to implement 27 per cent quota to the OBCs. While 5 per cent reservation will be provided this year, we add 11 per cent reservation for next two years to reach 27 per cent,” he told newspersons here on Thursday. “We are increasing intake by 20 per cent (from the current 3,500) to neutralise the impact of reservations on general admissions. This warrants additional infrastructure in the form of faculty, classrooms and hostels,” he said in reply to a question on seeking more funds. The university is also planning to recruit over 130 new faculty members soon to maintain its lecturer-student ratio at 1:9. More Stories on : Education | Andhra Pradesh
