Good demand for CTC at N. India tea auctions

Our Bureau

Kolkata, May 4

Last week, the CTC auctions at Kolkata, Guwahati and Siliguri saw a good demand with selected better sorts tending around last levels while the remainder were irregularly lower, according to J. Thomas & Company Private Ltd, the tea auctioneers. The local dealers and western India buyers continued to operate actively while there was useful support from other internal sections. The major blender was quiet while other packeteers were very selective.

The well made whole leaf category in the orthodox sale tended irregularly lower while plainer whole leaf and larger brokens were around last levels. Smaller brokens and fannings were firm to dearer. The CIS exporters were active with useful support from the west Asian shippers. The local dealers operated on the smaller grades. Darjeeling offerings met with a good demand. Better whole leaf were steady while plainer and medium sorts sold readily with prices irregular following quality. Brokens and fannings followed a similar trend. There was some support from the UK and the Continent while other traditional exporters and local dealers operated actively.

CROP

While leaf intake in the past week declined, the April crop is likely to be well ahead of last year.

INTERNATIONAL

The Mombasa auction met with a fair demand with some teas remaining unsold. The market was sharply easier following less enquiry from the traditional exporters at lower prices.

The Colombo sale also saw an easing in price levels for the high growns following a decline in quality. Low growns were largely firm to dearer, particularly the bolder Pekoe grade which appreciated. The shippers to the CIS, Japan, Turkey and the West Asia were active with good enquiry from other traditional exporters.
