Compensation for chilli farmers; sabotage ruled out

Hyderabad, May 8

The Andhra Pradesh Government has refuted conspiracy theories behind the fire accident at the Guntur chilli market yard last week while announcing compensation to farmers.

The State Government, which discussed the issues here this evening at the Chief Minister’s Camp Office, has decided to give a compensation of Rs 1,200 for a bag (of 40 kg each) to the farmers who had lost their produce in the fire.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and the Finance Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, said that the Government had also decided to shift the chilli market yard to a bigger place outside Guntur, keeping in mind the paucity of space.

“We propose to build a terminal market to provide space for all perishable commodities such as fruits, flowers, vegetables, fish and meat at the existing site,” the Chief Minister said.

Referring to the allegations of sabotage made by Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, former Chief Minister and President of the Telugu Desam Party, Mr Rosaiah said the allegations were baseless. “It happened due to a short-circuit. It is not an act of sabotage. We will utilise the space for developing yet another market yard for fruits and perishable commodities. We will not divert it to real-estate purposes as was alleged (by the Opposition leader),” he said.

The fire on Saturday at the Asia’s biggest chilli market yard resulted in a loss of about Rs 56 crore.
