Rubber Natural rubber sports new logo
New avatar:The Opposition Leader in Kerala, Mr Oommen Chandy, releasing the new logo for Indian natural rubber at the inauguration of a two-day international seminar on “Natural Rubber Extension and Development” in Kochi on Thursday. – Our Bureau Kochi, May 8 To increase the marketability of Indian natural rubber and position it as a world class product on par with international competitors, the Rubber Board on Thursday introduced a new logo for natural rubber at the inaugural function of the International Conference on “Natural Rubber Extension and Development” here. The logo was designed by Indian Brand Equity Foundation symbolises a seal of trust for Indian NR with a ‘quality assurance from the board’. The Rubber Board Chairman, Mr Sajen Peter, said the rubber plantation in India had registered spectacular growth in respect of area, production and productivity over the past 50 years. The area under rubber increased six and a half times, productivity five and a half times and total rubber production 35 times. Rubber replanting subsidy scheme, the pioneer extension scheme of the sector was launched during 1957, immediately after the formation of the Rubber Board in its present form. Financial assistance extended to growers was to the tune of Rs 250-400 an acre in seven annual instalments depending on the size of the holding. Since then, the board has been re-orienting extension schemes in a need based manner through various five years plans and annual plans, he said. Plantation industryThe board has taken keen interest in framing schemes suited to diverse needs of the rubber plantation industry right from supply of planting materials to group processing activities and export promotion. The extension of schemes targeted for the welfare of the rubber plantation industry includes supply of agricultural inputs, scheme for procurement of sprayers, acquiring infrastructure for latex and sheet collection by Rubber Producers Societies etc, he said. Mr Ommen Chandy, leader of the Opposition who released the logo at the function, called upon the Government to initiate steps for a farmer-friendly policy to boost the morale of rubber farmers. Complimenting the board for the great extension work, he said the board was offering the best services to farmers compared to other commodity boards in the country. India occupies the first position in productivity compared to all the NR producing countries. Dr Sebastian Paul, MP, in his inaugural address said the board should evolve more strategies to get maximum benefit to farmers. Likewise, it also makes schemes while prices are not stable.
