The Hindu Business Line : Wadhawan Holdings sets up storage, processing facility

Mumbai, May 9 Wadhawan Holdings Co Ltd has set up a 16,000 sq ft cold chain, warehousing and processing facility at Kalina at a capital expenditure of Rs 15-20 crore (minus land, technology and people costs), said Mr Srinath Sridharan, Vice-President and Head, Strategic Alliances, on the sidelines of the Food Forum India 2008.

It is managed by a joint venture between Dish Hospitality and Wadhawan, he said. With a capacity of 30,000 meals per shift, the facility will also cater to other retailers apart from Wadhawan’s chains — Sabka Bazaar, Spinach and S Mart.

The company is planning to introduce retort packaging for distribution and export of food products such as spices and sauces to supply chain management companies overseas, especially in West Asia and America. The company might get into dairy initiatives, like manufacturing cheese, in the coming months, he said.

New flavours

The retailer also runs and manages hotels and restaurants and plans to set up 35 Mexican restaurants called Sancho’s in India in the next three months, said Mr Roger Narula, Chief Executive Officer, Dish Hospitality Pvt Ltd.

The pan-Asian restaurant chain will tie up with the Mexican embassy in Delhi and set up shop at metros and a few tier-II cities, he said.

“We will be an Oriental casual dining space with the tagline ‘All Mex’d up!’ We will get bands, flamenco and salsa dancers from Mexico and decorate it with frescos,” The idea is to provide an ambience of Mexican culture in the eatery,” he said.

Funding mix

Without revealing financials, he said that all expansion would be funded through internal accruals and the promoter’s money. Last year, the company had announced obtaining the exclusive master franchisee for management of hotels and restaurants of the Dubai-based Jumeirah group in India.

The company is committed to setting up 35 Noodle Houses under the agreement in the next three years, he said.
