New Delhi, May 9 GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) operators added 6.1 million mobile subscribers in April taking the total user base to 198.8 million.

The operators had added 7.6 million subscribers in March. The dip in growth has been primarily due to poor performance by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd which got only 4.7 lakh new customers in April. The state-owned company had added 1.6 million subscribers in the previous month. The decline could be due to the crunch in network capacity being faced by the company.

Other mobile operators, however, improved on their growth in April against March. Bharti Airtel added 2.3 million new subscribers taking its total tally to 64.3 million. Vodafone Essar now has 45.7 million subscribers by adding 1.6 million new customers. BSNL is at the third spot with 36.6 million mobile users. Idea Cellular also got over a million new users taking its user base to 25 million at the end of April.

In terms of geography, B Circle States including Kerala, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan have overtaken other regions in the country to be the biggest market. These States account for 72.8 million mobile subscribers.

Circle A States comprising Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have 72 million users. Metros, where the mobile revolution had begun in 1995, now have just over 30 million mobile subscribers. Maharashtra is the single biggest market with 15.2 million subscribers.
