TN fishermen seek compensation for trawl ban

Our Bureau

Pudukottai, May 14

Fishermen of coastal villages have demanded introduction of a special allowance scheme to benefit the labourers during the 45-day trawl ban currently in vogue till this month-end. They have planned to stage an agitation at Manamelkudi, a coastal village, about 75 km from here, on May 19. A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of fishermen’s representatives convened at South Kudiyiruppu near Kottaipattinam, about 80 km from here.

A resolution adopted at the meeting sought a special per family off-season allowance of Rs.1,000 and 50 kg of rice during the annual ban. Urging the State Government to include all fishermen labourers as members of the Fishermen Society, another resolution said that only big fishermen owning mechanised boats were being enrolled to enjoy the benefits of the Society. All the fishermen workers to whom the State Fisheries Department had issued identity cards should be enrolled as members of the Society, without any discrimination.

Referring to the tsunami rehabilitation package, the meeting adopted a resolution urging the State Government to expedite the work on the construction of houses for all the beneficiaries.
