Tata Power to invest Rs 500 cr for wind power expansion

Rahul Wadke

Mumbai, May 28 Energy major Tata Power would be adding 115 MW of wind power capacity in the current fiscal at an estimated investment of Rs 500 crore, said Mr S. Ramakrishnan, Executive Director of the company.

He said that the new capacities would be coming up in Gujarat and Karnataka. Orders for the turbines have already been placed with Suzlon and Enercon. The company already has 85 MW of installed wind capacity in Maharashtra.

The company is also looking at solar sector for possible investment opportunity. However investment in the sector is not forthcoming as there is inadequate policy support from the government.

“We need to consider commercial returns and policy framework while investing in renewable sources of energy other than wind energy. Solar power is under active consideration. We are looking at the kind of solar technology, which will work optimally in India. We are spending a fair amount of time studying solar sector and unless we spend that time, money will not follow,” Mr Ramakrishnan said. He said that the company has taken a view that in next 10 to 15 years there would be cost to be paid for throwing carbon into the atmosphere. There would also be incentive in not throwing carbon.

Coal projects

Mr Ramakrishnan said that with the coal prices rising, the company has decided to take a more cautious view about bidding for plants which require imported coal.

“From a risk perspective we have decided to look at any opportunity based on imported coal with caution. We would consider long term outlook for coal availability and prices for such plants” he said.

Shipping

Mr Ramakrishnan said that the company plans to buy about six ships for coal handling with an investment of $500 million. “Meanwhile we have taken options with ship yards. We are evaluating those options and soon we would be converting those options into firm orders,” he said.
