Bandh brings work at Singur plant to a halt

Bandh line-up: Trucks lined up on the Durgapur Expressway on Friday, waiting outside the Tata Motors' factory gate at Singur. The plant was closed on Thursday and Friday because of the bandhs called by the Left Front and the Trinamul Congress in West Bengal against the fuel price increase announced by the Centre on Wednesday. - Sushanta Patronobish

Kolkata, June 6 The two-day bandh brought work at the Tata Motors Singur small car plant to a standstill, the first time this has happened since construction work began in January, last year. All work within the factory complex was halted and the factory-office remained closed for two consecutive days, on Thursday and Friday.

The hired contract labourers were seen sitting jobless at the factory site on Friday. A series of trucks loaded with cement and stones were also seen lined up outside the factory site since Thursday. The labourers who earn their wages on a daily basis stand to lose around Rs 60-100 each day.

“We are the victims of this work stoppage as we will lose our pay for these two days,” said Gopal Das, a contractual labourer, on Friday.

This is the fourth bandh in West Bengal this year. However, the first two, called by the Forward Bloc and the Trinamul Congress in February and April respectively, did not lead to any work stoppage at the small car factory.

When contacted the official spokesperson of the company said, “We are progressing as per our calendar and the cars will be rolled out before the end of the year.”
