Time for austerity

The Offhand column “Not the time for a pay hike” (Business Line, June 23) made a timely and important point. The non-indexed salary people and wage-earners like coolies and labourers are often forced to skip meals because of the escalation in prices of grains and pulses.

If the salaries of the government, employees are hiked, according to the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations, it will definitely fuel inflation further, making the lives of the poor people still harder. Government employees must voluntarily agree to the deferred implementation of the Pay Commission recommendations.

At this crucial time, austere life-styles and simple living must be watchwords for all people. The leaders, in particular, should emulate Gandhiji, Nehru, Rajaji and Lal Bahadur Sastri, who sacrificed their entire lives in the service of the Nation.
