‘Restore duty sops to N-E industries’

Our Bureau

Kolkata, June 26 The Indian Chamber of Commerce has pleaded for restoration of original excise duty concession granted by North-East Industrial and Investment Promotion Policy (NEIIPP) to industries in the north-eastern region.

NEIIP 2007 had granted 100 per cent excise duty exemption on finished goods made in the north-east with the objective of attracting investments to the region. The chamber has told the Central Government that the recent amendments made to the policy through departmental notifications have reduced the available excise duty benefits.

At a meeting held in New Delhi recently, the chamber had pointed out that it taken a lot of effort to promote the region as an investment destination and that the policy of full excise duty exemption was beginning to pay off. The dilution of the policy through departmental notifications was however negating the Government’s efforts to develop the north-eastern region, the chamber felt.
