Hyderabad, June 26 The intangible assets of a company are the key drivers of market value in a knowledge economy, said Mr Kris Gopalakrishnan, Managing Director and CEO of Infosys Technologies.

Delivering the keynote address at the HR Conclave organised by the AP chapter of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) here on Thursday, Mr Gopalakrishnan said that the intangible assets could be classified into four major categories – human resources, intellectual property assets, internal and external assets.

“In the new economy, human capital was the foundation of value creation and 85 per cent of a corporation’s value was based on intangible assets,” he added.

Mr Gopalakrishnan said that his company used Lev & Schwartz to compute the value of human resources and it was found that the total value for fiscal 2008 was Rs 98,821 crore and the value of human resources per employee was estimated at Rs 1.08 crore against Rs 80 lakh the previous year. He also stressed the importance of reducing the hierarchy in a company for better team work.

According to him, Infosys added 30,000 employees across all geographies last year after screening a million applications.

Quoting a Nasscom study, Mr Gopalakrishnan said that Indian IT industry would need 2.3 million software engineers, but there would be a shortfall of 23 per cent for want of talent. He also underscored the need for developing a talent pipeline by imparting training to associates by every company.

In his address, Mr B.V.R. Mohan Reddy, Chairman of CII’s Southern Region and Chairman and Managing Director of Infotech Enterprises, said that HR wings of corporates should work in tandem with the goals of the organisation for business development.

“HR plays a key role in creating value for all the stakeholders and the job requires a great attitude,” he said

According to him the new agendas that HR managers have is to work for proactive value creation and have the ability to innovate in terms of operational changes.

He added that since there is an enormous amount of cross border-trade happening, it is important that HR be able to address cross-border cultures.
