AP journalists get bail

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, June 26

A special court that looks into cases related to SC/ ST Atrocities here has granted bail to Mr K. Srinivas, Editor of Andhra Jyothi, and two of his colleagues – Mr Srinivas and Mr Vamsi – on Thursday.

They, however, will be released from the high-security Chanchalguda Jail only on Friday as the time ran out for the day to produce bail papers and furnish sureties.

The three journalists were arrested amidst high drama on Tuesday night from their Jubilee Hills office, following a case filed by Mr Manda Krishna Madiga. Mr Krishna, President of Madiga Reservation Porata Samithi (MRPS), had filed a case in the Jubilee Hills Police Station early this month, invoking the SC, ST Atrocities Act.

He alleged that the journalists had humiliated him by burning his effigy and beating it up with footwear.

The midnight arrests drew sharp criticism from journalists, intellectuals and political parties. The Editors’ Guild too condemned the arrests.

Thousands of journalists across the State organised rallies and dharnas on Wednesday and Thursday. Reporters covering the Secretariat boycotted the press conferences of Home and Energy Ministers on Wednesday.

Genesis

The whole issue started following a news report on the front page of Andhra Jyothi that a few Dalit and backward class leaders were sold out to the political parties in power. Enraged, followers of Mr Krishna attacked the newspaper office, pelting stones and damaging furniture.

Protesting the attack, the journalists took out a rally and burnt the effigy.
