Decontrol in sugar sales sought

Madurai, June 30

The Sattur Chamber of Commerce and Industries has demanded decontrol in sugar sales. In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, the General Secretary of the chamber, Mr P.T.K.A. Balasubramanian, pointing out to the dual price policy in vogue in the sale of sugar, said that sugar mills supply 10 per cent of their production at reduced rates and sell the remaining 90 per cent in the open market. With the crude oil price rising alarmingly at the world level, production of e thanol from sugar is necessary. For this sugar cane production needs to be increased. With the sugar production expected to go down both in India and abroad, steps are required to augment the production. A decontrol in the sale of sugar will help the process as farmers will be able to get remunerative prices by increasing sugarcane production and in turn, ethanol production could also be boosted. —
