Climate & Weather Government - Policy Action plan on climate change released Our Bureau New Delhi, June 30 To meet the challenges of climate change, the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, on Monday released a National Action Plan on Climate Change. Prepared under the guidance of his council on climate change including members of the Union Cabinet, representatives of civil society and Government, the action plan would focus on issues related to solar energy, enhanced energy efficiency, sustainable habitat, conserving water, sustaining the Himalayan ecosystem and agriculture. Global dimensionDr Singh emphasised the global dimension of climate change which demanded a cooperative effort on the basis of the principle of equity. “India was ready to play its role as a responsible member of the international community and to make its own contribution. India believed that every citizen of this planet should have an equal share of the planetary atmospheric space and therefore, long-term convergence of per capita green house gas emissions was the only equitable basis for a global agreement to tackle climate change,” he said. CommitmentThe Prime Minister also pledged for India’s commitment of pursuing a sustainable development plan despite its developmental imperatives, so that its per capita green house gas emissions does not exceed that of the developed countries.
