Transport body stands by threat to launch strike

Our Bureau

New Delhi, June 30 Continuing its threat to go on a nationwide strike from July 2, the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) on Monday said it will have a peaceful demonstration here on Tuesday.

According to AIMTC officials, the Government has not yet paid heed to their demands. In a press release, AIMTC Chairman, Mr Charan Singh Lohara, said: “We again request the Government to solve the issues sympathetically in interest of transport industry and public.”

Showcause notices

AIMTC is in a tussle with the Finance Ministry over a set of showcause notices issued by the Service Tax Department to some of the goods transport agencies (GTAs) on alleged service tax evasion due to claims of abatement benefits on cargo handling, and storage/demurrage charges.

The interpretation of which activities constitute GTA services is causing friction between the two sides as abatement facility is available for all GTA services.

Payment of service tax by transporters has been a controversial issue for many years. AIMTC is also looking for relief on toll charges of highways and duties on diesel.
