Dr Y.S Rajasekhara Reddy

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam, June 30 The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S Rajasekhara Reddy, on Monday visited the policemen wounded in a Maoist attack on the Andhra Pradesh-Orissa border and undergoing treatment in a private hospital here. He was accompanied by the Home Minister, Mr Jana Reddy, and the DGP, Mr. S.S.P Yadav.

The incident occurred on Sunday when the Maoists fired at the policemen travelling in a launch in the Balimela reservoir on the Andhra Pradesh-Orissa border. The boat capsized in the attack and 35 policemen could not be traced out of the 63 travelling in the boat. The chances of their survival are very bleak and the search operations are going on. The rest swam to safety.

Condemning the attack, the Chief Minister said that during the last four years of his rule the Government was taking up development activities as well as welfare measures in the Maoist-affected areas. They could not recruit a single person during the period and “in desperation they are resorting to such acts. They should understand clearly nothing could be achieved by such methods. Democracy is triumphant everywhere in the world.”

Promising all help to the families of the policemen, the Chief Minister said it would have no adverse impact on the morale of the policemen.
