The deal

Our Bureau

Mumbai, July 2 Piramal Healthcare Ltd has acquired the ‘Haemaccel’ brand of blood plasma products from Germany’s PlasmaSelect AG, for a cash consideration of €7.7 million (about Rs 53 crore).

Blood-plasma expansion products are life-saving infusion pharmaceuticals that help maintain blood plasma volume until blood transfusion can be given to a patient, in the event of blood loss.

At present, Piramal Healthcare markets the product as ‘Haemaccel’ in India and ‘Haemageline’ in 17 other countries. In 1998, Piramal Healthcare had bought the Haemaccel-related business in India along with the manufacturing facility in Mumbai from sanofi-aventis, the originator of Haemaccel.

In 2004, sanofi-aventis sold its Haemaccel-related rights in 76 countries and its manufacturing facility at Marburg, Germany, to PlasmaSelect AG.

The Piramal-PlasmaSelect transaction includes brand rights, contracts, registrations, dossiers and know-how relating to Haemaccel and associated brands, but excludes PlasmaSelect’s plant at Marburg.

Piramal Healthcare is setting up a new Haemaccel manufacturing facility at Baddi, Himachal Pradesh, with an initial capacity of 4.2 million units.

This would address the expanded Haemaccel sales, the note said. PlasmaSelect will continue to manufacture Haemaccel according to Piramal Healthcare’s requirements to facilitate orderly migration of manufacturing to the new facility at Baddi, the note added.

Piramal Healthcare shares were up close to two per cent on the BSE, at Rs 305.80 on Wednesday.
