Visakhapatnam, July 3

The National Academy of Construction, which has its headquarters in Hyderabad and six regional centres in other parts of the State, is seeking to train 50,000 workers during the current financial year in construction activities and other related trades, according to Mr V. Prabhu, Additional Director-General.

He said at a press meet here on Thursday that anticipating the boom in the construction industry and the need for skilled personnel the State had set up the National Academy of Construction in 1998 and since then the institute had grown as a role model for other States. “Many States are seeking to replicate the Andhra Pradesh model and are asking for our services. But we are limiting ourselves to consultancy services,” he said.

The academy was imparting training in masonry, electrical works, plumbing, bar-bending, painting, welding, carpentry, formwork and general supervision besides operation of heavy earth-moving equipment. “No fee is charged for most of the courses, with a duration of a few months. However, we are charging Rs 10,000 for the two-month course in operation of heavy earth-moving equipment, as we have to hire the machines,” he said.

During 2007-08, the academy could train 27,275 workers and place 24,333 of them against a target of 30,000, he said. The target for the current year was 50,000 and he expressed confidence that it would be achieved.

Besides courses in construction skills and technologies, he said, the institute was also offering courses in basic computer literacy to those in the construction fields and other fields as well. “For instance, we are training 80,000 policemen in the State in basic computer skills. We are also training prisoners in the State so that they can lead a respectable life after release,” he said.

He said the institute had more than 100 training centres in the State and the number would go up further during the current year. He said the academy wanted to set up a training centre for fishermen at Bhimli in Visakhapatnam district, but the response was not encouraging.
