You train them, we foot the bill, says TN Govt

Plans ‘finishing schools’ in each district

Our Bureau

Chennai, July 3 The Tamil Nadu Government will pay software companies for the pre-employment training expenses incurred by them to train graduates in the ‘special finishing schools’ being planned in every district, according to State IT Secretary Dr C. Chandramouli.

“It will be a pure industry initiative. We do not want to burn our fingers after Tanitec (a similar venture of the State Government) was closed down,” he told newspersons on the sidelines of the two-day Nasscom’s HR Summit 2008. The pre-employment expense for the first three months will be borne by the Government, he said.

A society will be created for the ‘special finishing school’ venture consisting of the top 10-12 top software companies.

A board of directors will be formed with representatives from the companies, government departments and educational institutions. A professional management headed by a chief executive will run the society, he said.

The ‘special finishing school’ is expected to start operations in a month, and provide graduates, both engineering and non-engineering, three months of pre-employment training. Most of the trained students will be absorbed by companies, which will also prepare the curriculum.

According to Dr Chandramouli, in the first tranche the companies will bring funds for the society and the Tamil Nadu Government will bring in an equal amount. The fee for the companies is yet to be worked out. Earlier inaugurating the HR Summit, Dr Chandramouli said the ICTACT (ICT Academy for Tamil Nadu) to train faculty planned by the State will start operations this quarter.
