Kolkata, July 4 Hawkers doing business on Rashbehari Avenue here today stalled the opening of a Spencer’s store in the area saying that such an establishment would affect adversely their means of livelihood.

A large number of hawkers sell their ware in the area, operating out of shops, temporary sheds and makeshift arrangements on the footpath.

The protesting hawkers, gathered under the banner of Hawkers’ Sangram Committee — a federation of all major trade unions barring the CITU — said the number of hawkers in the area was very high and that they would not allow any retail giant to set up any shop that would ultimately harm them.

Mr Sanjiv Goenka, Vice-Chairman of the RPG Group, who had reached the Spencer’s store for its inauguration, had to return without doing so.

Speaking to newspersons later, Mr Goenka said there was no clash of interest between Spencer’s and the protesting hawkers since what they sold belonged to different product categories.

“They believe that we are going to sell the same goods but that is not going to be the case,” he said.

“We need to understand, however, what their problem is,” he added.

Mr Goenka said that the incident would not have any impact on Spencer’s retail expansion plans. Spencer’s plans to open 350 stores across the country, including 20 in West Bengal, in the current year.
