Coal ‘Develop coal technology for eco-friendly energy’ Our Bureau Hyderabad, July 5 A national technology initiative to develop coal technologies for eco-friendly energy generation is the need of the hour, according to Mr Jairam Ramesh, Union Minister of State for Commerce and Power. necessary actionThe Power Ministry would take necessary action in this regard and propose the setting up of a national centre for coal technology, preferably at the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT) in Hyderabad, Mr Ramesh told newspersons during his visit to IICT on Saturday. “I think time has come to launch a major technology initiative in harnessing coal for energy by roping in scientific institutions, corporates such as National Thermal Power Corporation and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd in a public-private partnership model,” he said. Research“Way back in 1970s, IICT had worked on conversion of coal to petroleum. In the context of increasing oil prices globally, this may be more relevant now,” he said. Being the third-largest producer of coal in the world, India should take the lead in research pertaining to coal technologies. “In 2007-08, India consumed 470 mt of coal. It will touch a billion tonnes in the next ten years. “How we have to deal with this is a big challenge,” the Minister said. More Stories on : Coal | Environment
