Letters Expansion of G-8 In the context of key global issues such as the food crisis and soaring oil prices, the G-8 should strengthen its strategies. It should take bold steps to tackle problems such as climate change, poverty and AIDS that are the major stumbling blocks to global economic growth. The expansion of the G-8 into G-13 is the need of the hour. The fact that countries such as India, China, Brazil, Mexico and South Africa (the Group of 5) can make a major contribution to the world economy cannot be brushed aside. The UK Prime Minister, Mr Gordon Brown’s support for the G-5’s inclusion in the G-8 is welcome. But the opposition from countries such as Japan and the US to expansion of G-8 is reflective of their mindset against countries such as India and China. Inclusion of the G-5 countries will only add to the acumen and knowledge quotient of the G-8. As a result, the summits will get greater inputs from the new member-countries and this will yield more valuable outputs with respect to tackling global issues. P. S.
