CBDT shifts strategy for more revenue collections

K.R. Srivats

New Delhi, July 12 In a major shift in tax collection strategy, the Centre has decided to focus on improving Tax Deduction at Source (TDS) collections to achieve its budgetary target for 2008-09.

“This year our focus would be more on increasing TDS collections, if we are able to increase the TDS collections growth to 55 per cent from 50 per cent, we will be easily able to achieve the target for 2008-09,” Ms Saroj Bala, CBDT Member (Revenue), said here. .

For 2008-09, the Centre had recently revised upwards the direct tax collection targets to Rs 3,95,000 crore, from the earlier estimate level of Rs 3,65,000 crore.

In 2007-08, about 34 per cent of the total collections of Rs 3,14,000 crore came through TDS, according to Ms Bala.
