GM India, Gujarat govt to train ITI students

Our Bureau

Ahmedabad, July 14 General Motors India signed a memorandum of understanding with Gujarat to offer technical courses on automotive technology through a public private partnership model at Tarsali Industrial Training Institute in Baroda.

The company will invest over Rs 40 lakh to develop and create trained faculty and infrastructure at ITI.

“It will be like an apprenticeship with GM for the students, but they will be free to join any auto company after the course. With GM, they will be given the first preference of employment,” said Mr Karl Slym, President and Managing Director, GM India.

The company employs around 4,000 people at its three facilities in India. It will retain the strength but focus on improving the quality of employees, as there is a shortage of skilled technical manpower in the industry, said Mr Slym.

The company’s new plant at Talegaon will be operational by first week of September. It will have a capacity of 1.40 lakh units a year, taking the total manufacturing capacity of GM in India to 2.25 lakh units by the end of this calendar year.
