Mohan Reddy, Chairman of CII and Chairman and MD, Infotech Enterprises, at the launch of ‘Namma Halli’ project in Bangalore. Our Bureau Bangalore, July 14 Mr K.V. Kamath, National President of the Confederation of Indian Industry, on Monday launched a social project ‘Namma Halli’ that aims to provide a direct connect between the industries and the development work at the grass root level in Karnataka. Namma Halli (Our Village) is a project symbolising and inspiring industries to join hands in an organised manner with the ongoing effort of the Government and the civil society to bridge the developmental gap by maximising their potential, leading to a self-sustainable model at the end of the project. Addressing the CII members after the launch of Namma Halli project, Mr Kamath said the Indian economy was faced with a serious challenge of skill development. He said such a project would help in addressing the concern and help the country fulfill its goal of achieving higher quality and productivity. With the economy hoping to create 10 million jobs, it was imperative that skill sets kept pace with the task. He felt that though there were plenty of employment opportunities, and that inadequate ability of employable hands posed a serious challenge to sustained growth. The project, a joint effort of the Karnataka Government and CII, intends to involve local people for the various initiatives in the village. Spread over a three-year period, the implementation of Namma Halli will involve an investment of Rs 30 lakh for every gram panchayat. Five industry sponsors would support the venture, which would focus on economic development, agriculture improvement, livestock management, health, education and youth development and waste management. As a pilot, Gram Panchayat Doora in Mysore district has been identified for the intervention, where the work has already started. The aim was to help Doora emerge as a model village of Karnataka with three years of planned effort to for its overall development. Realising the challenge faced by the Government for rural development, CII hopes to replicate the endeavour in a public-private partnership with the Karnataka Government.
