New engine for i10: Mr H.S. Lheem, Managing Director, Hyundai Motor India Ltd, at the launch of i10 with Kappa engine in Chennai on Tuesday. — Our Bureau Chennai, July 15 Hyundai Motor India Ltd on Tuesday unveiled a 1.2-litre, petrol engine called ‘Kappa’ that would be fitted onto the company’s popular compact car ‘i10’. The i10 would be now available in seven variants, some with the four-cylinder Kappa engine and some with the existing 1.1 litre engine. Four of the seven variants come with 4-speed automatic transmission. The Kappa with four valves for a cylinder also features ‘double overhead camshaft (DOHC), which allows valves to open and close more rapidly, enabling engine to run at higher speeds. The aluminium engine weighs four kilos less than the existing 1.1 litre Epsilon engine. It is, hence, about 5 per cent more fuel efficient while delivering 10-15 per cent more power and torque than the existing cast iron engine. The Kappa will be produced at the Sriperumbudur facility. Addressing the media after the launch of Kappa engine and an i10 with the new engine, the Managing Director of HMIL, Mr H.S. Lheem, said, developed over a period of four years spending $421 million, the Kappa engine is Euro 5 ready as its emits only 119 gram/km of Co2, which is the lowest for this class. The company would soon introduce the engine in other models in the domestic market, he said. At present the company makes about 42 engines an hour and the plant works two shifts. It may go for a third shift when the second plant ramps up volumes, he added. The capacity of the existing engine plant has been matched with that of first plant — 3 lakh cars a year. It also exports about 20,000 engines for some special applications. With the company doubling its capacity last October, there was a shortfall of engines, which would get augmented with the new engine plant. Mr Lheem said that since the launch of the i10 in October last year, Hyundai has sold about 75,000 of them in India. The company booked orders for 110,000 i10 cars from abroad, of which about 65,000 have been delivered. VariantsWhile D-Lite and Era will have 1.1 litre engine, the other five variants, including Magna and Asta, will come with new engine, Mr Lheem said. Despite sporting Kappa engine, the new models will cost the same. However, the company has removed certain features, to maintain costs. For instance, Magna with Kappa engine will not have rear defogger and rear wiper. More Stories on : New Products & Services | Cars
